Kate Sommerville BSc MSc AVS

Kate started working in vascular ultrasound in 1989 at St Thomas’ Hospital Vascular Surgery Department following a life sciences degree and Masters in Medical engineering. After working in research and training staff at St Vincent’s hospital in Sydney, she returned to the UK to run the vascular ultrasound services at the Middlesex Hospital for 8 years. As Operations Manager for Vincent Medical Ltd she expanded the laboratory, to provide services to a large number of private clinics/ hospitals, supported by a staff of 10 vascular scientists.

She left in 2001 to establish London Vascular Services with colleague Elaine Young, an experienced vascular scientist, who had worked as the marketing manager at Vincent Medical Ltd.

Kate has continued to expand London Vascular Services, increasing the team from 2 to 6 whilst maintaining a high level of expertise and providing a quality service to the hospital or clinic as well as the patient and referring doctor.

Kate was also involved in the early evolution of the British professional body for vascular ultrasound; the Society of Vascular Technology for GB and Ireland. Kate sat on the the National Committee for 5 years and was elected its President in 1997. She was also on the Education Sub-Committee for 6 years, helping to establish and develop the accreditation system for vascular scientists which is now widely recognised by both the Vascular Surgeons Society and the NHS.

Nicola Milburn BSc PGDip AVS

Having completed a BSc at Loughborough University, Nicola trained and achieved her accreditation in 2002 at the Middlesex Hospital, one of the leading London hospitals for vascular ultrasound. She has also established her career at some of London’s premier teaching hospitals; the Royal Free Hospital and St George’s Hospital in London, working both as a senior member of the team and as Chief Clinical Vascular Scientist. Nicola joined LVS in 2010 from St George’s and was appointed co–director in 2014.

Nicola spent a number of years on the Society of Vascular Technology’s National Committee in various roles, primarily concerned with education. She was latterly involved with a group of colleagues rolling out a nationwide course for training surgeons in the basics of vascular ultrasound.

Jessica Matchan BSc AVS

Senior Vascular Scientist

Jess has worked in vascular ultrasound at some of London’s leading NHS and private hospitals for over 17 years. She has trained numerous junior members of the profession and is also active on the SVT Education committee.

Ana de Morais BSc, MRes, PgC AVS

Senior Vascular Scientist

Ana has over 7 years experience working in a very busy clinical vascular ultrasound environment in the North West of England across multiple hospitals, both private and NHS. She has been involved in a number of cutting-edge research projects as part of her postgraduate qualifications in both medical imaging and cardiovascular health and disease.
Ana is also on the executive committee for the Society of Vascular Technology for GB and Ireland.

Justyna Wojnicka BSc, MSc

Senior Vascular Scientist

Justyna is a highly experienced vascular scientist who has over 9 years experience working in large London teaching hospitals and private practice. She has a masters in medical imaging from Imperial College and has worked as part of the team at a specialist vein clinic.

Ben Villapando, RVT ARDMS

Senior Vascular Scientist

Ben qualified in the USA over 10 years and so brings the experience of working as a vascular scientist in leading teaching hospitals in Los Angeles and London to the team at LVS. During Ben’s career in London he has led the vascular scientists team at UCH so is very experienced at working in with multiple teams across the hospital site.
